Chronic sinusitis is a condition in which the air-filled spaces located around the nose become inflamed and swollen for an extended time, usually lasting for more than 12 weeks, despite attempts at treatment.  It is a common condition that affects millions of people worldwide, potentially having a significant impact on people’s quality of life.

The inflammation associated with chronic sinusitis can cause various symptoms. Some signs you should seek care for chronic sinusitis include:

  • Nose congestion or stuffiness that lasts more than 12 weeks
  • Thick, discolored mucus draining from your nose or down the back of your throat
  • Reduced or altered sense of smell or taste
  • Ongoing cough (more than 6 weeks)
  • Face pain or pressure
  • Fatigue
  • Ear pain or pressure
If you are suffering from symptoms of chronic sinusitis, you should see your health care provider or an ENT specialist for an accurate diagnosis and proper treatment. You will undergo a physical exam and possibly imaging tests, such as a CT scan, to help diagnose chronic sinusitis. Treatment for chronic sinusitis typically involves a combination of medications like steroid nose sprays, antibiotics and antihistamines. Other therapies like saline (salt water) sprays or rinses or decongestants may be recommended. In some cases, especially when medications have not provided relief, surgery may be necessary to open blocked areas or correct structural abnormalities contributing to the condition.
