If and when you decide to purchase hearing aids, your audiologist will walk you through the process in only a few simple appointments.
Pre-fitting hearing aid appointment
Your pre-fitting appointment with your audiologist will consist of the following:
- Determination of appropriate hearing aid style, size and technology level to meet your hearing loss and listening needs.
- If needed, a custom ear mold impression will be completed to ensure a comfortable and appropriate fit.
- Counseling on hearing loss, communication skills and listening strategies to improve overall communication.
- Referral to an Ear, Nose & Throat specialist, if appropriate, to determine if hearing loss can be medically corrected rather than using hearing aids.
- Discussion of the availability of hearing aid accessories such as connecting to cell phones, music players, televisions or external microphones.
Fitting hearing aid appointment
You will be contacted to schedule a hearing aid fitting once your customized hearing aids arrive from the manufacturer.
Your audiologist will:
- Ensure the hearing aid fits appropriately.
- Provide a personalized measurement with the hearing aid in your ear to prevent feedback (whistling).
- Program the hearing aid to your unique hearing loss.
- Measure the sound as it enters your ear through the hearing aid to provide real-ear verification of the programmed settings.
- Provide thorough instruction on the care, use and operation of the hearing aid.
- Teach you how to insert and remove the hearing aid to prevent loss or discomfort.
- Counsel on realistic expectations and the process of adjusting to your hearing aids.
Post-fitting hearing aid appointment
You will have a two week follow-up appointment, or sooner if needed, to determine how the hearing aids sound, feel and work day-to-day. Adjustments
will be made based on your feedback, listening environments and your lifestyle needs. Additional instructions will be provided for long-term cleaning and care of the hearing aids along with a demonstration of the wireless accessories, if appropriate.
Post-trial period
The long-term success with hearing aids requires routine follow-up care every six to twelve months. This includes inspection of ear canals for wax, hearing
aid cleaning and fine tuning as needed.
Remember to have realistic expectations. Adjusting to hearing aids takes time and will not happen over night. It will take time, patience and fine-tuning, but the results are worthwhile
