Isolation and quarantine are two of the tools we have to help stop the spread of COVID-19 in our communities. Isolation refers to a confirmed infection while quarantine refers to the time following exposure to the virus or close contact with someone known to have COVID-19.
Given what we currently know about COVID-19, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has recommended the following guidelines for isolation and quarantine.
If you test positive for COVID-19 (isolate)
Everyone, regardless of vaccination status.
- Stay home for 5 days.
- If you have no symptoms or your symptoms are improving after 5 days, you can leave your house but must continue to wear a mask around others for the next 5 days.
- If you have a fever, continue to stay home until your fever resolves.
If you were exposed to someone with COVID-19 (quarantine)
Everyone regardless of vaccination status.
- Wear a mask around others for 10 days.
- If you develop symptoms
- Isolate immediately
- Get tested and stay home until you know the result
- If you test positive, follow isolation recommendations
- Test on day 5, if possible.
- If you test negative, continue taking precautions through day 10
- If you test positive, follow isolation recommendations
