Do I have anything to fear with my child getting the COVID-19 vaccine?

With the COVID-19 vaccine now available to children 6 months and older, you may have questions about its safety. The COVID-19 vaccine is safe, effective and recommended for all children over the age of 6 months. According to the CDC, COVID-19 vaccine has been used under the most intensive safety monitoring in U.S. history, which includes studies in adolescents. Your child cannot get COVID-19 from the COVID-19 vaccine.

Like adults, children who receive the vaccine can experience common side effects including:
  • Pain
  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Tiredness
  • Headache
  • Muscle pain
  • Chills
  • Fever
  • Nausea
While these side effects may limit your child’s ability to do daily activities, they should go away within a few days. If the side effects persist, talk to your child’s health care provider.

Children’s fertility after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine

Across all of the COVID-19 vaccines clinical trials and reported vaccines received, there is no evidence of loss of fertility in children, nor has there been a loss of pregnancy for those who received the COVID-19 vaccines before or during pregnancy. According to the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, with all ages and genders there is no connection between fertility and the three vaccines currently authorized for use.

It’s important to know there has never been a vaccine that has affected a person's fertility. The COVID-19 vaccines go through the same process as other vaccines, so there is no reason to be concerned about infertility with the COVID-19 vaccine.

Future side effects

Although it is extremely unlikely, CDC, FDA and Public Health experts are continuing to watch the COVID-19 vaccine in children to identify any long-term effects. If you have any questions and concerns, it’s recommended to talk to your child’s health care provider.
