Vascular care
Prevea Vascular Care offers a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to limb preservation. We work hand-in-hand with other medical specialties to ensure our patients receive the highest quality of care to prevent limb loss and promote healing through improving circulation and restoring healthy blood flow to the affected limb.

What is limb preservation?

Limb preservation is treatment to preserve the function of a limb and restore quality of life.

Conditions that can increase the risk of lower limb disease include:

  • Aneurysm in legs.
  • Atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries).
  • Diabetic foot disease.
  • Function and mobility issues due to orthopedic conditions.
  • Peripheral vascular disease (PVD)/Peripheral artery disease (PAD) of the leg.
  • Traumatic injury.
  • Wounds and/or infections.

Chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI) and limb preservation

The physicians and surgeons at Prevea Health actively collaborate to provide advanced assessment and diagnosis of patients with chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI). Our highly specialized team has established clinical practice pathways for the prevention of limb loss. We strive to salvage (save) and preserve the function of limbs of people who are at risk for limb loss.

Patients with severe leg pain due to poor blood flow are often diagnosed with chronic limb-threatening ischemia. Ischemia means insufficient blood flow. Symptoms of CLTI include:

  • Rest pain (pain that becomes worse when lying down or when reclining in a chair).
  • Chronic or non-healing wounds.
  • Ongoing tissue loss.
  • Gangrene of the lower extremity.
  • Numbness or tingling in the limb, calf or feet.
  • Burning or tired or painful legs.
  • Swelling, burning or itching in the limb.
  • Venous leg ulcer (leg sores caused by problems with blood flow in your leg veins).

Treatment options for limb preservation

Our limb preservation program offers multiple treatment options, including:

  • Lifestyle modification and monitoring/preventive care.
  • Non-surgical treatment options:
    • Medication and medical management to improve blood flow.
  • Surgical treatment options:
    • State-of-the-art minimally invasive procedures to improve blood flow, including endovascular or catheter-based techniques to help wounds heal and improve functional and ambulatory ability in an outpatient setting with improved recovery and return to daily activities.
    • Surgical revascularization (surgery to restore blood flow to a body part) by board certified, fellowship-trained surgeons to manage severe arterial and complex venous conditions.
    • Limb-salvage angioplasty.
    • Lower-extremity bypass.
    • Endovascular intervention, which treats blood vessels for conditions like PAD.
    • Advanced wound care, involving specialists trained in modern patient-focused treatment plans; certified to administer hyperbaric oxygen therapy, advance diagnostics and regenerative tissue therapies.
